A konbini rice ball at 03:00 is a Nagoya rite of passage. Most retail runs 10:00 to 20:00 or 21:00, but the city’s 24-hour convenience stores never close. Department stores in Sakae and Meieki shut by 20:00; malls stay open an hour later.
Mitsukoshi, Matsuzakaya, Takashimaya: Department Store Hours

- Restaurant floors on the top or basement levels often serve for 30 to 60 minutes after the main store closes.
- New Year fukubukuro (lucky bags) and January sales start on 2 January. Stores open early for the rush, sometimes from 08:00.

- Late-night dining: Restaurants inside malls often serve until 22:00 or 23:00, well after retail floors lock up.
24/7 Konbini Culture
Every convenience store in Nagoya (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) operates 24 hours a day.
- ATM access: All konbini have ATMs (usually Seven Bank, Lawson Bank, or E-net) that work around the clock. Foreign cards accepted.
- Services available at 03:00: Bill payment, package delivery pickup (Yamato, Sagawa), ticket purchases (Lawson Ticket, 7-Eleven Ticket), photocopying, SIM card top-ups.
- What disappears late night: Some hot-food items (fried chicken, oden) may be unavailable between 02:00 and 05:00 during restocking. Packaged items are always on the shelf.
A handful of konbini in quiet residential pockets close from 01:00 to 05:00 because of staffing gaps. This is rare in central Nagoya (Sakae, Meieki, Fushimi). In a suburban neighbourhood after midnight, look for a posted closing time on the door.

- Peak crowding: Saturday 13:00-17:00 is the busiest window across all retail. Tuesday and Wednesday mornings (10:00-12:00) are the quietest.
New Year, Golden Week, and Obon Closures
New Year (29 December, 3 January)
- 29-31 December: Most shops open, but close early (17:00-18:00).
- 1 January: Almost everything closed. Convenience stores remain open. A few drugstores (Cocokara Fine near the terminal) open 10:00-18:00.
- 2-3 January: Department stores open 10:00-19:00. Malls open 10:00-20:00.
- Full normal hours resume: 4 January.
Golden Week (late April, early May 2026)
- 29 April (Showa Day): Some department stores closed. Malls open.
- 3-5 May (Constitution Day, Greenery Day, Children’s Day): Malls and department stores open regular hours. Supermarkets open.
- 6 May (Substitute Holiday): Normal Sunday hours.
- Effect: Retail is fully operational during Golden Week. Closures hit government offices and banks, not shops.
Obon (mid-August)
- 13-16 August: Many small shops close for 3 to 4 days. Department stores and malls remain open.
- 15 August: Some supermarkets close at 18:00.
- Effect: This is the quietest retail period after New Year. Plan shopping before 13 August or after 17 August.

- After 22:00: Only konbini and the 24-hour drugstore in Meieki are reliably open. Do not count on any department store or mall.
- Last train vs last purchase: Most malls close before the last subway train (around 00:00-00:30). Shopping in Sakae until 21:00 leaves 2.5 hours to reach your platform. In Meieki, you are already there.
